Rejoice all 18-20 year olds in Minnesota!
A federal appeals court has ruled that a Minnesota law which prohibits adults under the age of 21 from obtaining a permit to carry a firearm is unconstitutional, a decision that has been welcomed by supporters of gun rights.
The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals issued its ruling on Tuesday, upholding a previous decision by U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez that prevented Minnesota from refusing permits to carry to individuals aged 18 to 20.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has the option to challenge this ruling before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In 2021, members of three firearms advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against sheriffs in Douglas, Mille Lacs, and Washington counties, arguing that the state's age restriction on permit issuance violated their Second and 14th Amendment rights. The plaintiffs, all gun owners between the ages of 18 and 21, sought to overturn the prohibition.
